Campus Health Updates and Reminders

To: GW Community Members

We hope you had restful and safe holidays, and we look forward to seeing our students back on campus. Our Medical Advisory Group continues to monitor the rates of COVID-19 transmission in the D.C. region.  At this time, we do not anticipate any changes to the guidance provided to you prior to winter break.

As a reminder, the university will begin the Spring 2022 semester virtually to allow for a gradual and careful in-person return to campus.  This email includes information on the following topics:

  • January 10 Booster Deadline
  • Return to Campus Testing
  • Quarantine and Isolation Guidelines
     

January 10 Booster Deadline

The university will accelerate its COVID-19 booster dose mandate and will require that all eligible, returning community members receive a booster and upload documentation to the medical portal by January 10, instead of February 1.  The booster dose is required for access to campus. 

We will track booster dose eligibility based on your primary vaccination dates in the medical portal.  No action is required on your part.  If you are not yet eligible, the deadline does not apply to you.  If you recently had a COVID-19 infection and are otherwise eligible, you can receive the booster as soon as you have recovered and are out of isolation.  If you need a temporary extension due to a recent COVID infection, recent treatment with monoclonal antibodies or booster availability, contact the Colonial Health Center (students) or Occupational Health (faculty and staff) before the January 10 deadline. 

The  GW Medical Faculty Associates’ Vaccine Center offers free booster doses of Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson.  Walk-ins are welcome, but you may also schedule an appointment online.

In Virginia, GW Nursing is partnering with My Dr's Pharmacy to administer COVID-19 boosters; appointments are required.

Many local health departments, retail pharmacies and doctors offices also offer the COVID-19 booster. 
 


Return to Campus Testing

We are asking all campus members to obtain a COVID-19 test on their own (PCR or antigen) 48 hours prior to your planned return date if you can.  If it is positive, please report the result in the medical portal, begin an at-home isolation and do not return to campus.  If you are a faculty or staff member, notify your supervisor as you would according to usual sick policies.  If you had a positive COVID-19 test in the past 90 days, and the results are in the medical portal, the testing requirement does not apply to you.

Quarantine and Isolation Guidance

We are aware that the CDC has shortened its quarantine and isolation guidance.  At this time, there are no changes to GW’s current 10-day quarantine and isolation protocols. Only the Colonial Health Center (students) and Occupational Health (faculty and staff) can release a GW community member from isolation and clear you to resume in-person campus activities.  We will continue to monitor guidance from DC Health and will update the community if changes are necessary.
