GW to Reinstate Indoor Mask Requirement

April 11, 2022

Dear Members of the GW Community,

The George Washington University will reinstate its indoor mask requirement for all university-owned and -operated facilities beginning Tuesday, April 12, 2022.  This requirement will extend through the remainder of the spring semester, exam period and Commencement.  Masks must be worn at all times indoors unless you are actively eating or drinking or are in a private office or residence hall room.

This temporary measure is in response to an increase in positivity rates of COVID-19 on our campuses and the D.C. region. The highly transmissible BA.2 Omicron subvariant remains the dominant COVID-19 strain throughout the U.S. and in our region. We believe our university’s COVID-19 vaccine and booster requirement helps keep our community protected from severe illness or hospitalization.  However, with an eye towards final exams and Commencement, we are adjusting our public health protocols to reduce transmission of COVID-19 on our campuses.

We strongly encourage you to use a N95 or KN95 mask in classrooms and in all indoor university spaces rather than a cloth mask.  Free N95 masks are available to all students, faculty and staff at GW’s COVID-19 test centers and other locations on our campuses.

There are no changes to the university’s visitors protocol at this time.

As always, we will continue to monitor our cases and will re-evaluate our public health protocols following Commencement. Thank you for your cooperation and continued patience as we adjust to these changing circumstances.
