Information on COVID-19 Testing through Winter Break and January Return

December 08, 2021

The GW COVID-19 test centers will be closed starting Thursday, December 23, and will reopen the week of January 3. Please read this entire communication carefully regarding return to campus testing in January.

Please note that if you require a COVID-19 test prior to travel, you should schedule your test 48-72 hours in advance of your trip. All results for tests performed by 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 22, will be available by late Thursday, December 23. Updated hours for the GW test centers are available online.

Below is information on testing when you return to campus in January. Appointments are available online now through January. It will take about an hour from when you test until your GWorld card is activated for campus access.

Test Early and Park Free at Foggy Bottom Campus

If you are in the D.C. area prior to January 10, please schedule your test for the week of January 3 to avoid peak test times. The university will offer one hour of free parking in the G Street Garage to those who test between January 3-7. Your parking garage ticket will be validated at the testing center.

Week of January 3 Testing

If you are returning to campus the week of January 3, we strongly encourage you to test the day you return. Testing hours are available online. Schedule your test now, or before you leave for winter break, for the day you will return to campus. Campus access holds due to overdue testing will go into effect January 5. If your badge reads overdue, please be sure to test prior to January 5, or the day you will arrive back to campus after winter break. If you need immediate campus access but are having trouble scheduling an appointment, please email [email protected] or call the COVID-19 Information Line at 1-855-GWU-INFO.

Move-in Weekend Testing for Residential Students

The Foggy Bottom asymptomatic testing center will be open during move-in weekend from noon - 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, January 8 and 9. Please schedule a test appointment for the day you arrive. Testing is only available at the Foggy Bottom Campus.

Week of January 10 Testing

If you are returning to campus the week of January 10, we anticipate very high demand for testing on January 10, 11 and 12. Please schedule your test for the day you are returning to campus or earlier if possible. Campus access holds due to overdue testing will go into effect January 12. If your badge reads overdue, please be sure to test prior to January 12, or the day you will arrive back to campus after winter break.

External Testing

You can also stay in compliance and avoid interruptions in access by getting tested outside of GW. You may upload your external COVID PCR test into the medical portal to satisfy your testing requirement. This is another way to avoid peak testing times January 10-12 and to avoid access interruption for testing non-compliance.

The walkup line at the Foggy Bottom testing center will be available for urgent testing needs every day the testing center is open. If you do not have an appointment and use the walk-up line, you should anticipate a wait time much longer than normal. We ask that you use this option only as a last resort.

Travel Quarantine for Unvaccinated Community Members

If you are unvaccinated by virtue of a GW approved medical or religious exemption and are travelling back from outside of D.C., Virginia or Maryland, you will have a mandatory travel quarantine and will not be able to access campus (other than your residence hall room for residential students) for at least seven days. Please plan accordingly. Details are available at the Onward website.
